Board directors today are confronted with the growing expectations of stakeholders, across a myriad of issues. Coupled with the shifting global dynamics of power and transformational changes brought by information and technology, there is increased pressure for Directors to navigate the new and the unknown, while staying anchored on their core, for performance and results.
This session seeks to explore your contribution and impact as a Board Director against this new backdrop of change. Through a combination of concepts, tools and experiential learning, you will enhance your cognitive agility and intuitive capability to exercise wise power in governance.
Facilitated by Professor Marc Le Menestrel, Associate Professor at University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) and Visiting Professor at INSEAD, an expert in the field of decision making, and in particular the role of ethical values in business decisions, the session will include:
- Strengthening your agility to consider differing perspectives and redefine the boundaries of your thinking
- Initiating meaningful contributions and approach your decisions in a comprehensive, multilevel and multifaceted manner
- Structuring your understanding of the global forces of power and deepen your understanding of board dynamics
- Enhancing your gravitas and presence at the board, and your ability to influence the dynamics of board discussions and decisions
Participants will also have the opportunity to build their awareness of dynamics at the Board, enhance their posture and presence, and learn to initiate as well as influence board discussions and decisions.
At the end of the session, participants will understand how wise power and effective governance require not just a focus on the end results, but also a need to forge one’s own path, with a vision and purpose beyond the goal.
Marc Le Menestrel teaches and coaches senior executives and board directors on high level performance and leadership as well as the exercise of wise power in governance, sustainability, anti-corruption and risk management. Leading companies and academic institutions are using his expertise and innovative pedagogical approaches to inspire leaders in search of both performance and meaning. As a decision scientist, Marc's research is focused on the theory of choice; the congruence of rational thinking and ethical values in decision making; and the use of mathematical theories of measurement to articulate the subjectivity of human behaviour.
Marc is a tenured professor at University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). As visiting professor, he is affiliated with the INSEAD Corporate Governance Centre and the Social Innovation Centre. He also teaches the ethics of sustainability leadership at the Cambridge University Institute for Sustainability, and is a regular contributor to the Lisbon MBA. Marc co-leads the African Directors Program, a joint collaboration between INSEAD and Stellenbosch University. He is an advisor to the World Economic Forum on its Partnering for Anti-Corruption Initiative.

The circumstances faced by organisations and Board Directors are dynamic and transformational. These add both risks and opportunities to build a more resilient operating environment depending on decisions taken by the board. Today's session with Professor Marc Le Menestrel teaches us to modify and change our way of thinking and feeling before deciding - which is critical for concrete decision under extreme conditions under unexpected difficulties. It also teaches me that in a world full of surprises, we need to stay motivated by what is truly important to us and be ourselves at the board, offering our ability to influence the dynamics of board discussions and decisions.
